Treasures.

Found these treasures on our walk today:

Hmm, what to do with them?  I have a small craft project in mind for the smooth river stones, which I found scattered on the sidewalk in front of someone's house down the street.  The sidewalk is fair game, eh?  The pine cones - well, who doesn't need a few extra pinecones?  The Bradford Pear branch now lives in a small jelly jar filled with water on the kitchen windowsill.  But not until after the little one was quite enamored with it for awhile.  Oh, the wonder of a child!

Look up!

On Valentine's Day, my husband took his two girls on a day trip to Waco and Austin.  75 and sunny in February...yes, please.  We were escorted the entire way by beautiful skies and returned sun-kissed and a little more freckle-faced (well, at least I did).  Going through my photos from the day, I realized something: the vast majority of them were of trees and sky.  And that made me happy, because how long has it been since I looked up?  Apparently awhile, because I could not seem to take enough pictures of the heavens, the tips of trees.

I spend too much of my days stiff-necked at a computer screen, zoned-out watching a TV show, or immersed in the latest household emergency.  But looking up, I never regret.  The sky is the daily bread of the eyes, the breath of fresh air for the soul.

When is the last time you looked up?

It's hard to see in this photo, but there was a wind chime dangling from a branch high up in this tree

Inspiration Book.

I'd like to introduce you to my Inspiration Book

It's simply a binder filled with carefully-torn magazine pages slipped into plastic sleeves for safe-keeping - images that conjure up certain feelings in me.  I've been adding to the book here and there for several years now.  Just recently, in our effort to get rid of clutter 'round the house, I sifted through all our magazines - past issues galore of Coastal Living, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Country Living, and Real Simple to name a few - and tore out the bits and pieces I wanted to save.

Why? Oh, just to be inspired.  Just to admire design and nature, to let my own creativity be sparked anew. It could be a tiny portion of a single photo that I love, or an entire page, like a leaf-scattered street scene in a small New England town, or an autumn tree ablaze...

A deserted wooden dock on a lake with two empty chairs, or a cozy outdoor fireplace...

A perfectly rustic bedroom and kitchen that I could re-create on my own {much smaller} dime...

Other times it's the written copy on the page that catches my eye...

The page above reads,

"A loon's cry breaks the silence of an early-morning walk along the shore.  A sprinkler throws off long, lazy curls of water that glow in the honey-colored light of late afternoon.  Screened porches serve as boxed seats for showy thunderstorms that rumble and blaze above the lake.  The clothes may have changed, but the pastimes are perennial."

It's wonderful to be inspired.  This book is far from perfect - page edges are torn and small photos are taped to the page quickly, edges overlapping.  It's just like art, though, "Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in." ~ Amy Lowell.  The goal of my Inspiration Book is not to make me pine away for another life that looks glossy on a magazine page.  Rather, I hope it inspires me to savor my own life more.  To see the art and beauty that is all around me, everywhere I look.

In my element...

I'll share more photos soon from our family vacation to Aspen, but in the meantime I wanted to share this one...

Steven took this photo of me in downtown Aspen and said, "This is totally you in your element - you're a mama now but still taking photos as you love to do..."

It made me so happy to have a husband who understands me so well!  Especially in these days when my identity has changed so much, I love knowing that my creative side is still alive.  I want to keep it alive.

Here's the photo I was taking...

More to come!

Our little girl's room.

The nursery is ready!

It's been so incredibly fun expressing my creativity in this way.  Thanks to the help of several friends and family members, it's come together just as I had imagined.  So many of the things in her room were gifts or passed down from generation to generation, and I love that.

We still don't have the crib, but she'll be sleeping in this co-sleeper next to our bed for awhile anyway.  In the meantime I'm hoping to find one used on Craigslist.

So without further ado, here is a little tour.

When you open the door, this is the view in front of you and to the right.  First, you'll see the loveseat we brought in from the living room, and hanging above it, our homemade "lamp" from the parasol I carried in Suz's wedding that my husband rigged to hang from the ceiling.  The lovely pillows were handmade by my fellow pregnant friend, Bre.  On the floor is my orange canvas diaper bag, packed and ready to go!  The two-toned yellow rug was a great find on Overstock.com.

The front sides of the pillows are made from Anna Maria Horner's "Drawing Room" fabric...

Bre then added orange and pink pom-pom edging from JoAnn's and different fabrics on the back from Amy Butler and Heather Bailey.

To the left of the love seat is a rustic side table holding a vase of branches that was truly a collaborative effort...the branches are from my friend Autumn's wedding, and they are adorned with some paper birds and owls from another friend Robyn's wedding, as well as some birds from one of my baby showers.  They have beautiful blessings written on the back that I'm sure I'll need for encouragement during some late nights!

To the right of the loveseat, I created a wall collage with a mix of meaningful photos and illustrations, including two bird drawings that Steven did as a child.  When his mom gave them to me, I knew they'd be perfect to frame in the room!

One hook holds a soft bin from IKEA filled with supplies I might need while nursing, and the other is perfect for displaying cute outfits, like this tiny pink dress...

On the floor, "Sophie La Girafe" and her friends sit in a soft, colorful bin from The Container Store.

Both of the dressers in the room were from my brother's old baby furniture.  Here's one holding family photos and a cute owl bank from Etsy.  I spraypainted the original drawer pulls white and alternated them with yellow knobs from a salvage store.

Next comes the closet which, thanks to many generous gifts and hand-me-downs from friends, is stocked!  Some of the most precious items are my very own baby dresses that my mom has saved all these years.

On one side of the door, this IKEA cabinet is perfect for storing odds 'n ends, wonderful childrens' books, and showcasing Steven's baby shoes.  Most of the books are lovingly worn, because they are the exact ones my mother read to me - The Llama's Pajamas, Sammy the Seal, and Corderoy, to name a few.

On the other side of the door is this dresser which folds out into a changing table. The "It Is Going To Be OK" illustration is a reminder I'll probably need quite a bit in this particular location!

Now, for the last wall.  Last night, our dear friends Justin & Autumn decided to come over and give a wonderful gift - painting a mural, just like the wall decal I liked from Etsy.  Our version is a lot more wispy and soft, and I love how it turned out!   The crib will eventually go on this wall.

Inside that bassinet, which my brother used for all three of his children, is her first stuffed animal - a soft little lamb from my dad.  It's from Williamsburg, VA, which was our family vacation spot for eleven years. The lamb rests against a crocheted pillow that was mine as a baby.

And finally, just for fun, here's the room by night.  I think the parasol makes a very enchanting lamp, don't you?  It's so peaceful that Steven and I like to come in here and sit and wonder what it'll be like to hold our baby girl in a very short time...

Now, all we need is HER!

Baby girl room.

So that "nesting" thing people talk about? It's real.

While I don't subscribe to the idea that we have to break the bank to create a nursery that the child won't even notice or even really enjoy for a few years, I also believe that the natural "nesting" urge is there for a reason. There is something fitting - perhaps essential - about preparing a place for your baby before he or she enters the world.  Whether that's a basket in the corner of a tiny apartment or its own private room, I realize now how important it is to have this experience.

My philosophy is to use as much handmade or recycled items as possible...that's more meaningful to me anyway than ordering the entire room from a Pottery Barn catalog.  Ya know?

So, here's my little plan I've been working on...

  • Bird mobile.  My friend Robyn is making this for me!  Robyn and I go way back to the Grassroots Music days, and she's always been a source of creative inspiration. She's using real branches and Amy Butler fabric for the little birdies.  I can't wait to see it!
  • Wallpaper.   My friend Michelle and I found this whimsical wallpaper online and had an idea for a project.  I already have these dark wood dressers that were actually my brother's furniture when he was little.  One of them has a top that folds out to be used as a changing table, and later, a desk.  They have great style but are looking pretty banged up.  At the same time, I honestly do not have the patience to prep, sand, prime, and paint two sets of dressers with all the other things on my plate right now.  Instead, I'm going to buy this bird/cloud wallpaper at only $20/yard and cut a piece to fit the front of each dresser drawer and attach it with spray adhesive.  So the drawer fronts will have the paper, and the rest of the dresser will stay dark wood.  Add some new drawer pulls, and we basically have a brightened and refaced dresser while keeping a family heirloom.  Voila! {Let's hope I can actually pull this off...tips, anyone?}
  • Anna Maria Horner bird fabric.  This fabric is from her Drawing Room collection. I thought it would be adorable for pillows for the love seat we're moving in from the living room, or for crib bedding.  The lovely Bre Taylor {who is also pregnant a few weeks behind me} has agreed to lend me some of her sewing expertise!
  • Bird/branch wall decals.  Found these on Etsy and loved them!  They apparently look like the wall has been painted, although they're a non-permanent vinyl.  I can't decide which one I like best but am leaning towards the larger, sweeping branch that's shown over the bed in the above image.  Which one do you like best?
  • "It Is Going To Be OK" print. I already have this framed in the guest room.  It was given to me as a gift and reminds me everyday of this simple truth.  As a child of God, I really do believe it is all ultimately going to be OK...and I'm figuring I'm going to need this daily reminder even more once I become a mother!  Plus I love the colors.  Everything in the Studio Mela Etsy shop is amazing.
  • "Be Loved.  Be Free." print. Another Etsy find.  Love the birds, love the message.
  • Amy Butler fabric.  This kind of squiggly fabric is from her Midwest Modern 2 collection.  Not sure if I want this or the other fabric for pillows and bedding.
  • Branch curtains.  These are from IKEA, and I got them on Ebay a long time ago.  They're staying on the windows.
  • "Cascading waters" paint by Behr.  I painted this on the walls last spring and am keeping the color.  It's the perfect soothing, pale green, and I love it.  Several months ago, I had pondered repainting the room in a low or non-VOC paint, but then decided it didn't make sense given the fact that the entire rest of our house isn't using non-VOC paint...so is there really a point?  I just felt like I was being legalistic about it and felt so much better when I decided to keep the current paint on the walls.
  • Owl bank.  Once again, found on Etsy.  I just love supporting artists of handmade items!  How cute is this bank?  We always have random spare change around the house, so I thought we could gather it here and start a college fund for our daughter :)

So, one wall will mostly be taken up by one of the branch decals, and on the other wall, I plan on creating a big collage of mismatched picture frames in a cool formation...including framed prints and also photos of our family members as babies, including some of Steven and I.  I have some really cute ones of my mom as a toddler sitting on the front steps of her shotgun apartment in Jersey City in the 1940's with her mother - a grandmother I don't remember because she passed away when I was two.

We plan on using an Arm's Reach co-sleeper for the first while so our baby girl can sleep in our room with us.  Not sure when we'll move her to this crib, but my intention is that even after that, I'll still be able to be responsive for whatever she needs. I realize at first, the baby room will be more of a haven for me than anything.  Still, it'll house her tiny clothes and books and be a place where we can play and nurse.  And I'll dress her on the changing table that her uncle Glen used over 40 years ago.

I'll keep you posted on the progress!

Come on in!

After about a year of watching the paint on our front door chip and peel in the scorching Texas sun, I finally decided it was time for a fresh look.  I wanted a happier, brighter first impression upon entering our home - something other than the boring, faded brown.  I'm a girl who loves splashes of bright color and thought a happy orange would mesh well with the mint green, cream, and burgundy colors on the outside of our home, while also providing a welcome contrast.

Here is the before and after...

What do you think?  My wonderful mom came to visit last weekend and is responsible for all the scraping and sanding and the first coat of paint.  After I realized the outdoor paint we chose was actually low-VOC, I was brave enough to apply the second coat this weekend and finish it up.  Depending on the light and time of day, it seems tangerine, or carrot, or pumpkin, or chai.

I love the color and hope it creates a more welcome entry to our home!

by night

Coming soon - new colorful doormats and this swing for the front porch {all gifts from my mom}, along with repainted wooden furniture that a friend found for me on the side of the road.  Stay tuned for more front-of-the-house makeovers!
